Backwater Fishing with Local Fishermen
Fishing is a way of life for many families living along the backwaters of Alleppey. On this experience you join local fishermen in a traditional wooden country boat and spend a few relaxed hours on calm stretches of water, away from the busy houseboat routes. The fishermen show you how to bait and cast a rod, how to spot where fish gather, and how throw nets and Chinese-net techniques are used to bring in the day’s catch. Children and adults alike enjoy the excitement of waiting for a bite, while the scenery of coconut palms, birds and village homes makes it peaceful even when the fish are shy. Whatever is caught, such as pearl spot (karimeen), tilapia or small river fish, is cleaned and grilled with a simple Kerala masala on the shore or at a local home, and served hot. Life jackets are provided and the activity is arranged in the early morning or late afternoon for the best conditions.
